Part of that comes down to me not owning a notebook computer. Over the course of like Christmas and New Year and Chinese New Year, and the signing of my newest clients, which amounts to like 3 months, I’ve never, ever thought of taking the D1 on the road. Note: AudioEngine assure me that the fingerprints and other blemishes will be taken care of.ĭespite not fitting into a pocket, the D3 comes with a bit of micro fibre that’s supposed to make it easy to stuff into pockets. It performs based on those merits, not on satellite expectations. Sure, I’d love Audioengine to, with a pristine package, prove to us that they care about perfection, but we are talking about a technological tour de force here. At its current price of 169$, my feelings are ambivalent. The thumb prints may be factory seals of approval. That is to say: the same niggles apply.Įvery Audioengine product I have opened comes with smudges, fingerprints, and an ‘inspected’ sign. Note: excepting price, the first part in this section remains largely unedited from my review of the D3. It preserves the D1’s great plug’n play heritage.

Just like the D3, the D1 resamples information higher than 96kHz to 192kHz. Users of sensitive earphones should be careful. That is to say that unlike an analogue pot, volume neither eases up, nor eases down. The volume pot seems to suddenly jump up by a decibel or more. While it doesn’t play in its ballast, making the slightest of changes isn’t as simple as it should be. The volume pot is nice to have even if it looks like a gumdrop.

I also assume that if you’re in the market for a DAC/headphone amp, you know how to do it.

I assume that with Windows you have to do some sort of driver stretch. If you have a Mac, it’s all just plug and play. Second is the RCA pair at the back, which make the D1 really easy to hook up to your favorite amp, HiFi, or TV. First, as long as you can power it from an external source, it works well with optical sources. What the D1 gave up in simplicity it gained in pluggies.

It’s got the same basic performance of a D3 plus way better connection options, not to mention a volume pot, and no need for a reach-around. P.S.2 In addition to the amp: It would be nice to have the RCA input, but this is not a must, so please recommend any amp you know that can suit the HD598.The D1 is pretty damn awesome. Just a reminder, I want a broad and balanced sound. Now I think I shall buy a dac maximum $400-$500 and an amp for $150-$250. If my budget is less than US$800, what are my choices? My friends said that combo is simplier but having less variety of sound( as dac and amp cannot be changed in a combo).

This means that I need a more powerful dac in the future.ġ.What dac/amp/combo shall I buy in order to suit the HD598? Or I have to consider my headphone upgrade two years lager(buying a more powerful dac)?Ģ.I am not sure if I should buy a dac or a combo. It seems that when I am having a dac/amp it would be better for me to get something like HD800( to me, HD600 or HD650 have too much bass) or headphones at the range of $600. I may buy a new headphone about 2 years later since I have never tried a high nominal impedance headphone yet. I have to say that M1 HPA did a great job and I would buy it if the problem mentioned can be solved, but it seems that using M1 HPA with HD598 is a bit of waste. I am wondering if this can be solved by adjusting the EQ. This makes me feel that M1 HPA with HD598 is too dark for hearing female vocals. The bass is too much when using HD598 since I like all the fequencies(low, middle and high) to be balanced. The only thing I am not satisfied with the M1 HPA is the bass. I have to say that I cannot stand the quality of the dacs before the X-can v8p on my above list. It sounds much better for the X-can v8p with HD598 but with narrower soundstage compared to the M1 HPA. I tried the filo series(e7,e9 etc.), nuforce, fire stone( 4,fubar 2 usb dac), and finally X-can v8p and M1 HPA. But then when I found out that my HD598 do need a dac, I started to regret for my decision. I am not saying that the HD598 does not suit me because before buying it I thought I will be using the headphone without a dac/amp. Since this is the first time I bought a headphone (in the past I was just using a Sony earphone for about US$40 ), I think I chose the wrong headphone. I bought the HD598 a year ago and I have tried a lot of dac and dac combos for the HD598. I have read some of the posts here about HD598 and I still cannot get the answer of how to choose a suitable dac/amp for HD598.
